I stayed up and went to get my pre-ordered copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince tonight. There was a pretty diverse crowd in every sense of the word. There were small kids running around, pre-teens, teens, college students, parents, single middle-agers, older folks with grandchildren and some just there because they’re kids at heart I guess. Just about every ethnic or cultural group was represented in the small crowd from boring white suburbanites, to Indian women in saris, to the tattooed and piereced, to the the nerds like me who look at home in a bookstore after midnight. It’s funny how the series has caught on not just with so many people, but with so many kinds of people. It’s nice to see a book draw such big crowds and have such a big audience. It’s common for reality shows getting votes or movies like Star Wars, but I can’t recall a book doing this before. Maybe it’s just frivolous entertainment, but, to me, that’s even better.
I took a few pictures with my new camera that arrived today, and you can see them in my Harry Potter set on flickr. I showed up around 11:20PM, and was out the door by 12:20AM and had time to browse for some other books, so it was a pleasant experience even though there was a crowd of about 400 to 500 people there. I unexpectedly ran into a close coworker there a little after midnight too.
Anyway, I’m going to try to take my time reading it this time (I think I finished the last in 2 days), since I know it will be a long wait for the last one. I probably won’t put a review up here, since it will be one of the books least in need of another review on the Web.
